Tom Brady was a very good sport while he was the subject of a savage roast on Netflix recently, but the legendary former quarterback is now taking issue with how some of the comments affected his children.
During “The Roast of Tom Brady,” the seven-time Super Bowl champion faced sometimes vulgar jokes about many aspects of his life. But the ones about his divorce from Gisele Bundchen – who is the mother of two of Brady’s children – upon reflection may have hit too close to home.
“I loved when the jokes were about me,” Brady said. “I thought they were so fun. I didn’t like the way that it affected my kids.
“So, it’s the hardest part about the bittersweet aspect of when you do something that you think is one way and then all a sudden you realize I wouldn’t do that again because of the way that affected actually the people that I care about the most in the world.
“So, I guess it makes you in some ways a better parent going through it ’cause, again, you don’t, sometimes you’re naive. You don’t know, or you get a little like, ‘Oh, s—,’ y’know, and like I said, when I signed up for that, I love when people were making fun of me.”
Comedian Nikki Glaser, considered one of the best performers at the three-hour event that was shown live on Netflix, was among those who focused on Brady’s divorce from the supermodel. For her part, Bundchen reportedly was disappointed with how she was portrayed at the event, which she did not attend.
Glaser later admitted that a decision was made to not involve Brady’s kids in the content of their jokes. The 47-year-old father of three also has his oldest child with actress Bridget Moynahan.
The star-studded event included sets by Brady’s former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and teammates Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Randy Moss and Drew Bledsoe. Along with Glaser, host Kevin Hart and Jeff Ross were among the well-known comedians who took part, as did actors Ben Affleck and Will Ferrell.
During the event, Brady actually did react after Ross made a joke about Robert Kraft, referencing charges the Patriots owner faced in the past. The five-time Super Bowl MVP walked up to Ross at the podium and told him to avoid that subject matter.
The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback also said that having faced the jokes at his expense once, he is putting the experience in the past.
At the moment, Brady remains retired as a player, though there have been hints during this offseason about a possible return. He is involved in the ownership group with the Las Vegas Raiders and reportedly is set to make his debut as an NFL game analyst for Fox Sports.
The network has announced that Brady will call the Week 1 game between the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns on Sept. 8.
