With the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s 2025 collegiate football campaign now underway, it has been reported that UNC head coach Bill Belichick has banned all scouts from the New England Patriots from attending Tar Heel practices.

A source connected to UNC has since hinted at the rationale behind the decision. The source indicated that Belichick has not been treated fairly by the Patriots since his time as the head coach of the franchise came to a close.

โ€œWhy would we let them in our home after how heโ€™s been treated since he left? We will help our players, but being treated fairly is a two-way street,โ€ the source told the Boston Herald.

Belichick is considered by many to be the greatest head coach in NFL history thanks in large part to all the team accomplished while he was leading the Patriots from the sidelines. He was New England’s head coach for more than two decades and led the team to a whopping six Super Bowl victories in that time.

Despite all that the Patriots achieved under Belichick’s leadership, New England didn’t necessarily give him a hero’s goodbye when his time with the team ended. Initially, the conclusion of his Patriots stint was framed as a decision that both sides mutually agreed to. However, Patriots owner Robert Kraft later went on record as saying that New England fired Belichick.

Unfortunately, Belichick’s maiden season as the Tar Heels’ head coach hasn’t gotten off to a strong start. The team opened its season with a matchup against Texas Christian University (TCU) and got demolished in that contest, as UNC lost by a final score of 48-14. The Tar Heels totaled just 222 yards of offense and 50 rushing yards.

UNC will try for its first win of the new campaign when it does battle against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Saturday night. Charlotte also dropped its opening game of the campaign.

Hopefully, Belichick’s relationship with the Patriots organization isn’t broken beyond repair after how successful their partnership was for so many years, but the tea leaves suggest that might just be the case. Patriots fans are likely to view Belichick fondly for years to come regardless, however, as the team might not be the storied franchise it is today if not for him.
