Report: Expectation is that Daniel Jones’ new deal will be over $35M per year

The New York Giants have a big decision to make with quarterback Daniel Jones, and after an impressive 2022 season, it looks like the young signal-caller is going to get paid.

Jones, who is fresh off the first playoff victory of his NFL career, is expected to earn a new deal that will pay him over $35 million per year.

“The expectation is Jones’ new contract will come in at over $35 million per season, according to multiple sources in and around the team and the quarterback,” Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported. “Anything slightly over $35 million per season would rank Jones’ contract ninth among all quarterbacks. By the time next season comes around, however, Jones will likely be closer to the top 15, assuming Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow — and Lamar Jackson, if he doesn’t get tagged — get new deals.”

Prior to the season, there were some serious questions marks regarding Jones and his future with the team. However, it appears that those questions have been answered.

In his end-of-season press conference with members of the media, Giants general manager Joe Schoen seemingly let his plans for the future slip.

“We’re happy Daniel is going to be here,” Schoen said. “We’re happy he’s going to be here.”

Last season, Jones passed for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns while throwing just five picks. He did a lot of damage on the ground as well, rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns.

The question for the Giants now is whether or not they can keep Jones and star running back Saquon Barkley. The two clearly have formed a strong relationship on the field, and it seems clear that the partnership could lead to even greater success in the future.

However, it is always a questionable decision for teams to pay big money to running backs these days, especially when there is a young quarterback that also needs to get paid.

In the end, the problem of having to figure out how to pay a number of talented young players is always a good one for professional sports teams to have. Only time will tell if the Giants do end up deciding to pay the big bucks to keep their offensive core intact.
