The New York Jets reportedly are set to sign wide receiver Randall Cobb on a one-year deal to join the team and new quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Cobb and Rodgers were longtime teammates with the Green Bay Packers, and Rodgers actually helped bring Cobb back to Green Bay after a stint away from the team earlier in his career.
The move gives the Jets yet another option at receiver, where they already have Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis and Allen Lazard. Like Cobb, Lazard came to New York from the Packers this offseason in free agency.
The Jets appear to be doing everything they can to make Rodgers happy, and it should help the team run smoothly on offense with two key players that have already played with the former MVP.
Cobb has spent 10 of his 12 NFL seasons with the Packers, playing with the team from the 2011 season through the 2018 campaign. He then joined the Dallas Cowboys for a season before heading to the Houston Texans for the 2020 season.
The one-time Pro Bowler rejoined the Packers for the 2021 campaign, appearing in 25 games for the team over the last two seasons.
The veteran receiver caught 34 of his 50 targets last season for 417 yards and one touchdown. The 32-year-old is past his prime, but he is a reliable option that Rodgers will trust when he’s on the field.
The Jets are hoping Rodgers can take them to new heights in the 2023 season after the team fell short of the playoffs last season. New York had one of the best defenses in the NFL in the 2022 campaign, but the team lacked consistent quarterback play.
Rodgers is a massive upgrade over the trio of Mike White, Zach Wilson and Joe Flacco, who all made starts for the Jets last season.
With both Cobb and Lazard in the fold in New York, Rodgers has two go-to targets that he’s already established chemistry with. That should allow him more time to get acquainted with Davis and Wilson as the Jets prepare for the 2023 season.
New York should make some noise in a tough AFC East that features the Buffalo Bills (playoff team last season), Miami Dolphins (playoff team last season) and New England Patriots (playoff team in the 2021 season).
