Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is nearing the end of his second season in a New York Jets uniform, and while he hasn’t been hampered by injury this season like he was in his maiden season in New York, he hasn’t often looked like the player that starred with the Green Bay Packers for years.
Effectively, this has been Rodgers’ first season as New York’s quarterback. He’s thrown for 3,623 yards and 24 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions through 16 games. While those numbers aren’t necessarily bad, he and the Jets offense have struggled to score points all season, and it’s led to a 4-12 record.
According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, there exists “great doubt” around the NFL that Rodgers will return to the Jets next season.
“There have been no edicts from [Woody] Johnson to any of the candidates concerning Aaron Rodgers in 2025,” Jones wrote. “Around the league, there’s great doubt Rodgers returns to the Jets considering his play and personality. Rodgers has hinted at possible retirement, and he’s going to take some time after the season to determine his own wishes and whether they align with what the Jets ultimately want.”
Rodgers put together maybe his worst individual performance of the season in the Jets’ most recent contest against the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 29. He completed only 12 of his 18 passing attempts and also threw two interceptions and zero touchdowns in a game New York lost by a score of 40-14.
The Jets are amid yet another losing season, as they clinched a sub-.500 record long ago and will remain in search of their first winning season since the 2015 campaign.
The Jets and Rodgers will soon wrap up their season with a matchup against a divisional opponent on Jan. 5. New York will take on the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium, and the Dolphins are still trying to secure a spot in the playoffs with a current record of 8-8. The Dolphins won the first matchup of the campaign between the two squads on Dec. 8.
Considering the lack of success that Rodgers has enjoyed since becoming a member of the Jets, perhaps he will decide to call it quits on his NFL career after this season. After all, he’s now 41 years old and has been in the league ever since he was drafted in the first round back 2005.
Rodgers has already accomplished more in the NFL than most players at his position can dream of, and he will go down as one of the better quarterbacks in the history of football whenever he does decide to call it a career.
