49ers CB Charvarius Ward’s 1-year-old daughter tragically passes away

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward shared on Instagram that his daughter passed away on Monday.

It’s a tragic situation for Ward and his family, and hopefully he will be able to take the time he needs to process and begin healing from the loss.

The 49ers are on their bye week in Week 9 of the NFL season, so Ward won’t have to think about playing in another game until Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 10.

San Francisco released a statement on social media in support of Ward and his family on Tuesday.

Ward spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning a Super Bowl in the 2019 season.

Prior to the 2022 season, he signed a three-year deal with the 49ers worth more than $40 million. He enjoyed arguably his best season in the NFL in the 2023 season with San Francisco, earning his first Pro Bowl nod. He was also named an All-Pro.

During the 2023 season, Ward led the NFL in passes defended (23) and recorded five interceptions, a career-high. San Francisco ended up making the Super Bowl, but it lost to Ward’s former team – the Chiefs – in that matchup.

This season, Ward has appeared in seven games for the 49ers (starting all of them). He’s recorded 35 tackles and five passes defended, while San Francisco has put together a 4-4 record.

Right now, football likely will take a bit of a backseat for Ward and his family as he grieves the loss of his daughter. Hopefully, he will be able to continue playing this season and help San Francisco make another deep playoff run.

It’s possible that he’ll choose to honor his daughter in some way the next time he plays in a game.
