The Washington Commanders could be facing a lengthy absence for Daron Payne after the defensive tackle suffered a foot injury in Friday’s practice.
Payne is likely to go on injured reserve and will undergo additional evaluation Saturday. Washington subsequently ruled Payne out for Sunday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The concern extends beyond this weekend. In a follow-up to his initial report, Rapoport raised the possibility that Payne might not return this season.
“There is a possibility that Daron Payne has played his last down in 2026,” Rapoport wrote.
That remains a possible outcome, rather than a confirmed season-ending diagnosis. The initial report described IR as likely, and Saturday’s evaluation is the next step toward determining the extent of the injury.
Payne’s loss removes a player who has started all six of Washington’s games this season. He has recorded 14 combined tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.
His place in Washington’s defense stretches well beyond those six games. Payne has appeared in 136 regular-season games for the franchise, starting 130, with 38 career sacks.
His highest single-season sack total came in 2022, when he finished with 11.5.
Commanders lose Daron Payne with Javon Kinlaw already out
Payne’s absence compounds an existing problem in the middle of Washington’s defense. The Commanders had already ruled out Javon Kinlaw with a knee injury before the more serious Payne news emerged Friday evening.
On the team’s earlier injury update, Payne was listed as questionable after limited participation Friday. The later announcement changed his status to out, leaving Washington without both linemen against Philadelphia.
Jer’Zhan Newton is also questionable as he works toward returning from a pectoral injury suffered in the preseason finale. Head coach Dan Quinn had described Newton’s potential return as a way to help offset Kinlaw’s absence.
Washington now has another vacancy to address, without certainty that Newton will be available. Tim Settle and Shy Tuttle remain among the interior options.
The team’s unofficial depth chart lists Settle on the first line with Tuttle behind him, while Charles Omenihu is listed behind Kinlaw.
Those listings identify available options rather than a newly announced replacement plan for Payne. His injury leaves Washington needing to redistribute work across a group that was already missing Kinlaw.
Washington faces Saquon Barkley with a depleted defensive front
The timing makes the losses especially relevant to Sunday’s matchup. Saquon Barkley has been cleared to play after dealing with hamstring and back issues, according to Washington’s game-status update.
Omenihu, who missed the Week 6 game against San Francisco, could provide help against the run. He practiced on a limited basis throughout the week with groin and ankle issues but did not receive a game designation on Friday’s report.
Washington therefore has some potential reinforcement, but Newton’s availability and the distribution of interior snaps remain important questions.
For Payne, the immediate decision is settled: He will miss Philadelphia, while further testing will determine how much longer the Commanders must plan to play without him.
