The Washington Football Team will finally unveil its new team name and logo on Feb. 2, according to team president Jason Wright.
Washington changed its name from the Washington Redskins before the 2020 season. The team has been in the process of figuring out a new name for the past two seasons.
A few of the team name options have already been ruled out, as the franchise has taken fan interest and trademark rights into consideration during the process. “Wolves” and “RedWolves” were both popular fan options that have been ruled out for trademark reasons.
“Early on we understood Wolves — or some variation of it — was one of our fan favorites,” Wright wrote in a letter published on WFT’s website. “As I’ve said all along, we take feedback from our fans seriously, and because of your interest in this name, we put Wolves on a list of options to explore fully.
“Once we began looking into Wolves, however, we became aware of a notable challenge: Trademarks held by other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn’t have been viable either for these and other reasons.”
Washington finished 7-9 in the 2020 campaign, its first season under its current moniker. The team won the NFC East before losing in the playoffs to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who wound up winning the Super Bowl.
The team is currently 6-10 after a 20-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles this past week. Washington will close out its 2021 season on Sunday on the road against the New York Giants.
