Antonio Brown takes wild shot at WNBA star Brittney Griner’s gender

Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown made an uncalled comment towards Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner after it was announced that she and her wife are expecting their first child.

Griner bravely came out back in 2013, making her one of the more prominent athletes in the world at the time to share that she is gay.

“I really couldn’t give an answer on why that’s so different,” Griner said in 2013. “Being one that’s out, it’s just being who you are. Again, like I said, just be who you are.”

Griner married her wife in 2019 after knowing each other for several years.

It’s great to see the happy couple celebrating another milestone in their relationship, even though some people like Brown may have insensitive comments towards it.

Back in 2013, Griner talked about being authentically herself when she came out.

“Don’t worry about what other people are going to say, because they’re always going to say something, but, if you’re just true to yourself, let that shine through. Don’t hide who you really are,” Griner said.

A fractured toe cost Griner the start of the 2024 WNBA season with the Mercury, but she has since returned to the lineup and appeared in two games.

The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA draft is averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 63.6 percent from the field this season.

An eight-time All-Star and one-time WNBA champion, Griner is an integral part of a Mercury team that is hoping to contend for a title this season. Phoenix made a blockbuster trade this past offseason to acquire three-time All-Star Kahleah Copper from the Chicago Sky.

The Mercury gave up forwards Brianna Turner and Michaela Onyenwere and first-round picks in 2024 (third overall) and 2026 to acquire Copper and forward Morgan Bertsch.

Now, Phoenix has a loaded roster that features Copper, Griner and legendary guard Diana Taurasi. So far in the 2024 season, Phoenix is 6-6, but it is 2-0 in the two games that Griner has played in.

Brown, who last played in the NFL in the 2021 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been active and unfiltered on social media in his post-playing career.

A Super Bowl champion and seven-time Pro Bowler, Brown had a tumultuous end to his NFL career, getting released by the Las Vegas Raiders before playing a single game with them and then bouncing around with the New England Patriots (one game in the 2019 season) and the Buccaneers to close out his career.
