Nancy Lieberman — who played for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and Detroit Shock — said that if she were Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark, she would have punched Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter, who bumped Clark to the floor in the third quarter of a matchup between the Fever and Sky on June 1.
“If I were Caitlin Clark, I would’ve punched her in the face,” said Lieberman. “I’m from New York, and I would’ve told her to f— off. And that would actually cure the problem. … Damn, where’s Caitlin Clark’s teammates? I’d be pissed as s— at my teammates that nobody came to my defense.”
Former Los Angeles Lakers star Nick Van Exel weighed in on the incident involving Carter and Clark on X (formerly known as Twitter) and said that the drama the latter has been in is good for the league.
Another former Laker in Nick Young recently accused Clark of being a flopper.
While Clark didn’t retaliate to Carter’s bump from a physical standpoint, the former can take solace in the fact that her team came out on top. The Fever beat the Sky by a final score of 71-70, and the 22-year-old totaled 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field as well as eight rebounds, six assists and one steal.
The former University of Iowa standout was careless with the ball at times against Chicago, however, considering she turned the ball over five times against Carter and company.
Clark has been one of the more productive first-year players in the WNBA so far this season — as she is averaging 15.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game — but her contributions haven’t translated into many wins for the Fever to this point.
Indiana owns a record of just 2-9, which is one of the worst in the league. The Washington Mystics are the lone team in the Eastern Conference with a worse record, as the squad has yet to pick up a single win this season across nine games played.
WNBA fans don’t have to wait much longer to see the Fever and Sky face off once again, as the teams are scheduled to play each other on June 16. It will be exciting to see if any bad blood between Clark and Carter carries over into that contest.
