Saquon Barkley’s afternoon against the Los Angeles Rams ended early Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles ruled their star running back out with a hamstring injury.
The Eagles initially listed Barkley as questionable before announcing that he would not return. His exit leaves Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley to handle the backfield work for an offense already playing without several established starters.
The immediate decision concerns the rest of the Rams game. Philadelphia’s announcement did not provide a timetable for Barkley’s return beyond Sunday, leaving his availability for subsequent games unresolved.
For Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts, the problem is more immediate: keep the offense moving without the player who has delivered some of his biggest performances against this opponent.
What happened to Saquon Barkley against the Rams?
According to the Eagles’ official game updates, Barkley exited after a six-yard run in the first quarter. Bigsby took the next carry and gained seven yards for a first down, immediately stepping into the rushing attack.

The possession followed an Andrew Mukuba interception that gave Philadelphia the ball in Rams territory. The Eagles eventually finished the drive with a Jake Elliott field goal, but the injury changed their personnel outlook well before halftime.
Barkley’s initial questionable designation left open the possibility of a return. The subsequent downgrade closed that possibility for this game, without establishing the severity of the injury or whether it will cost him additional time.
That distinction is important as attention shifts toward the remaining running backs. More work is available Sunday, but there is not yet a confirmed long-term opening in Philadelphia’s starting lineup.
What Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley offer behind Barkley
Bigsby arrived in Philadelphia through a September 2025 trade with Jacksonville. The Eagles sent fifth- and sixth-round picks in the 2026 draft to the Jaguars, adding a back who had rushed for 766 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2024 season.
He subsequently showed he could produce in a smaller role behind Barkley. The team’s official statistics credit him with 344 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 58 carries for Philadelphia in 2025, an average of 5.9 yards per attempt.
His early 2026 numbers were more modest: 14 carries for 36 yards and one touchdown through three games. He also caught three passes for 10 yards during that span.
Those totals describe his work entering Sunday, rather than his production after Barkley’s exit.
Bigsby discussed his preparation in an Aug. 8 interview with the team’s Dave Spadaro, when he was going through his first Eagles training camp after joining the team during the previous season.
“You know, whatever I got to do to help the team win, I step up and do my role,” Bigsby said.
Those were preseason comments, but Sunday’s assignment makes that preparation relevant. Bigsby has had an offseason in Philadelphia’s system, while his previous production gives the Eagles experience to draw on beyond his limited workload through three weeks.
Shipley provides another established option on the roster. Philadelphia selected him in the fourth round of the 2024 draft.
He returned 29 kickoffs for 777 yards in 2025, and his first NFL touchdown came against Washington in the NFC championship game during the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX run.
Neither player’s background establishes how Sunday’s carries and passing-down snaps will be divided. The relevant comparison is how the coaches use them together, rather than assuming one automatically inherits every part of Barkley’s job.
Jalen Hurts is working with a depleted supporting cast
Barkley’s injury adds to an offensive availability problem that was already substantial before kickoff. The Eagles’ inactive list included DeVonta Smith, Marquise Brown, Dallas Goedert, Lane Johnson and Fred Johnson.
Smith was out with a hamstring injury, Brown with an ankle injury and Goedert and Fred Johnson with knee injuries. Lane Johnson was inactive for personal reasons.
Philadelphia therefore entered the game short of receiving options as well as depth at offensive tackle.
The Eagles elevated tight ends Zach Ertz and Josiah Deguara from the practice squad for the game. Ertz had made one catch for nine yards against Chicago, while Deguara was set for his Eagles debut.
The team had also identified increased opportunities for Dontayvion Wicks and rookie Makai Lemon in its Friday injury report. Wicks entered the weekend with nine receptions for 179 yards and a touchdown.
“It’s next man up,” Wicks said in that report. “We’re going to be ready.”
That challenge now extends to the backfield. Hurts and the coaching staff must account for changes in the running game, receiving personnel and protection, rather than simply replace one ball carrier in an otherwise intact offense.
Philadelphia also came into Sunday looking to respond to its 27-7 loss to Chicago. Losing Barkley complicates that effort before the Eagles can establish whether their offensive adjustments will hold up for an entire game.
Why Barkley’s absence changes the Rams matchup
Barkley’s history against Los Angeles explains why this was a particularly significant loss. He has 506 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns across his previous three Eagles appearances against the Rams, including the postseason.
Los Angeles entered this meeting having held each of its previous two opponents to 80 rushing yards or fewer. Philadelphia’s remaining backs were therefore taking on a defense with recent success against the run, regardless of what Barkley had accomplished in earlier meetings.
His most memorable performances came during the 2024 championship season. He had a 255-yard regular-season game against Los Angeles and his 205-yard performance against the Rams in the divisional round.
Those games helped power a season in which Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards during the regular season and 2,504 including the playoffs. Philadelphia rewarded him with an extension through 2028, underscoring his place in the offense’s longer-term plans.
Fantasy outlook while Barkley’s status remains uncertain
For fantasy managers, Bigsby merits waiver consideration or a bench stash if available, with Shipley also worth monitoring. That is an assessment of the opportunity created by Sunday’s injury, not a prediction that Barkley will miss another game.
The eventual snap distribution, receiving work and goal-line opportunities will matter more than simply identifying the first replacement to take a handoff. A firm start-or-sit recommendation for next week should wait for an updated diagnosis, practice participation and evidence of how Philadelphia intends to divide the work.
