Spencer Dinwiddie says there’s ‘high likelihood’ he’ll return to Nets if they offer him 5-year, $125 million contract

Spencer Dinwiddie is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason after missing almost all of the 2020-21 season due to injury.

The 28-year-old is sure to have multiple teams interested in signing him, and he has already declared himself the best point guard available on the market.

While speaking with Sports Illustrated’s Howard Beck, Dinwiddie, who played for the Brooklyn Nets this season, revealed what could potentially happen during his free agency.

“For all the fans that think like because I opted out like I have to leave or something like that,” said Dinwiddie. “No, this is very much in the Nets hands. You feel me? And I think my full max is five, 196 million or something like that. And nobody is sitting here saying I’m going to get five, 196 million so before anybody tries to kill me, nobody is saying that.

“But the Nets have the ability to do something that other people can’t. If the Nets come to the table like that and they’re being aggressive and saying, ‘Hey, we got five, 125 for you,’ like I would say, there’s a high likelihood that I go back to the Nets. You know what I mean?

“But if they don’t come to the table like that, and they’re like, ‘Oh, we’re going to give you a three for 60.’ Well, anybody can do that.”

During the 2020-21 season, Dinwiddie only appeared in three games, averaging 6.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. The 2019-20 season was by far the best of his career as he averaged 20.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game.

While the Nets would surely like to keep Dinwiddie on their roster for next season, the team already has lots of money committed for next season.

Only time will tell if the Nets will have to end up replacing Dinwiddie with a significantly cheaper option should he ask for too much money.
