The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly expected to make a run at Atlanta Hawks big man John Collins if he hits restricted free agency this upcoming offseason.
“Finding a bona fide second option for [Luka] Doncic is paramount to optimizing the young superstar, and Dallas can still clear max cap space this upcoming offseason,” wrote Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report. “If John Collins were to reach restricted free agency, expect the Mavericks to make a significant offer, according to league sources.”
Collins, 23, is a huge part of the Hawks’ young core.
However, numerous executives believe the power forward’s future will be elsewhere. Collins reportedly turned down an extension in excess of $90 million before the season.
On the season, he is averaging 17.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest. The Hawks have a 13-17 record and are gunning for a playoff spot this year.
Doncic needs more firepower around him if the franchise wants to launch into contention in the elite Western Conference.
The Mavs hold a 14-15 record.
