On Thursday, the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys ended a lengthy standoff with star linebacker Micah Parsons about his contract by trading him to the Green Bay Packers. The move comes less than a week after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he wouldn’t trade Parsons.
In light of the news that Parsons is heading to Green Bay, the sports world reacted to the city of Dallas losing NBA star Luka Doncic and now Parsons in the very same year.
It’s safe to claim that 2025 has been a rough year for Dallas sports fans, as Parsons isn’t the first star player to leave one of the city’s professional sports teams via trade this year.
Fans witnessed the Mavericks trade Doncic, their longtime face of the franchise and one of the best players in the league, to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. The Mavericks went on to not even qualify for the 2025 NBA Playoffs after they shipped the Slovenian off to Los Angeles.
The Doncic trade was particularly perplexing because he helped the Mavericks make a surprise run to the 2024 NBA Finals not long before they jettisoned him to the Lakers. At least in the case of Parsons, the Cowboys experienced limited playoff success with him on the roster.
Parsons is set to join a Packers team that already fielded one of the top defenses in all of football in the 2024 season. Green Bay held teams to just 19.9 points per game last season, the sixth-fewest of any squad in the NFL.
Maybe he will prove to be just what the Packers needed to take that next step as a team and legitimately contend for a Super Bowl ring in the upcoming 2025 season. Green Bay won 11 games last season and made the playoffs sans Parsons part of its defensive unit.
Cowboys fans might not be feeling all that optimistic heading into the new campaign with Parsons no longer a member of the team. Plus, Dallas is on the heels of its worst season in some time and ended up with just seven wins, so Cowboys fans maybe shouldn’t be holding their breath that the team will be successful in 2025.
