The Golden State Warriors are losing a key part of their organization as executive Bob Myers is stepping down, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Tuesday.
Myers, whose contract expires in June, reportedly declined offers from the Warriors to stay. Myers did not reveal any future plans, but Wojnarowski speculated that if he does decide to seek a new job, he is expected to become “one of the most pursued executives in modern North American professional sports history.”
Myers was named Warriors general manager in April 2012 and later given the additional title of president of basketball operations. He hired Steve Kerr as coach, signed Kevin Durant as a free agent and traded for Andrew Wiggins. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green all re-signed with the Warriors under Myers.
The Warriors’ 2022-23 season ended with a six-game, second-round loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, which followed a Game 7 win against the Sacramento Kings in the first round. Golden State struggled for much of the regular season and was under .500 in late February.
The Warriors are trying to win another championship with their core group in place after adding one in 2022. They also won titles in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
Their future becomes even more uncertain with the departure of Myers. Green has a player option and could become a free agent this offseason, and Thompson could be looking for an extension as he heads into the final season of his contract.
The Warriors must also decide how Jordan Poole fits into their plans after he had a disappointing season on the heels of a large contract extension. Jonathan Kuminga also may have fallen short of expectations and might see himself involved in a trade. Perhaps the Warriors use Kuminga in a trade for someone like O.G. Anunoby.
A new collective bargaining agreement also could make it more difficult for the Warriors to continue to operate as they have. It has been an incredible run with Myers, and whoever replaces him will take over one of the marquee franchises in the NBA.
