Report: Indiana Pacers expected to trade Malcolm Brogdon in the offseason

The Indiana Pacers reportedly are expected to trade guard Malcolm Brogdon this coming offseason after they acquired Tyrese Haliburton in a deal with the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday.

The Pacers traded away Domantas Sabonis to bring in Haliburton. They also moved Caris LeVert in a different deal earlier this month.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the team is expected to move on from Brogdon once he is eligible to be traded this offseason.

“Rival executives around the league believe the Indiana Pacers will trade Malcolm Brogdon this offseason following the departures of Caris LeVert and Domantas Sabonis, along with the acquisition of Tyrese Haliburton,” Scotto wrote.

 

“Brogdon, 29, signed a multi-year extension in October of 2021 that made him ineligible to be traded until the offseason. Now, Brogdon is owed $67.6 million over the next three seasons.

 

“Haliburton is considered a young star in the making and the point guard of the future while under a rookie-scale contract for the next two seasons. Indiana can trade Brogdon for future draft pick compensation or improve at other positions.”

The Pacers appear to be entering a rebuilding stage, as they are currently the No. 13 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 19-37 record. The acquisition of Haliburton certainly makes it easier to move on from a player like Brogdon.

This season, Brogdon has been limited to just 28 games. He hasn’t played since Jan. 19.

He is averaging 18.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game this season while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 30.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Brogdon had a breakout season in the 2020-21 campaign, as he averaged a career-high in points per game (21.2). He also shot a respectable 45.3 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Those numbers have dipped this season, partially due to injury. His struggles have perhaps changed the Pacers’ thoughts on him as a key piece for the franchise moving forward.

Indiana may try to build around Haliburton if it can get a solid return for Brogdon in the offseason.
