Legendary NBA point guard Chris Paul spent much of the middle part of his playing career with the Los Angeles Clippers. He was one of the best floor generals in all of basketball as a Clipper, as he earned an All-Star nod in all but one of his six seasons with the team.
Paul also led the NBA in steals per game three times and assists per contest twice in his Clippers tenure.
Years after Paul’s stint in Los Angeles ended, the Clippers appear be weighing a reunion, according to a recent comment from Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank.
Frank said that the Clippers are “strongly” considering Paul, who is still a free agent and on the open market.
“What I’ll say about Chris is he’s a great player, he’s a great Clipper,” Frank said. “And, of course, we’re strongly, strongly considering him.”
Paul turned 40 years old in May and is quite long in the tooth, but he still provided the San Antonio Spurs with steady playmaking in the 2024-25 season. He dished out a team-high 7.4 assists per game and even suited up in all 82 games for just the second time in his career.
The 12-time All-Star makes a lot of sense for the Clippers as a backup point guard behind James Harden. Paul can come off the bench and the Clippers won’t sacrifice much from a playmaking standpoint when Harden sits.
In addition, signing with the Clippers could theoretically give Paul a real chance to win a title before he retires from the NBA. Los Angeles has added the likes of Brook Lopez, John Collins and Bradley Beal to the fold this offseason after the team won 50 games a season ago.
The Clippers stack up with almost any team in the NBA on paper heading into the coming 2025-26 season, and the addition of Paul would only bolster their already impressive depth.
Maybe Paul will soon agree to sign with the Clippers and kick off his second stint with the franchise.
It would be nothing short of a storybook ending to Paul’s career if he were to return to Los Angeles and help the Clippers win their first title in franchise history in 2026.
