Danny Green is very high on Victor Wembanyama as he begins his third season.
The franchise piece of the San Antonio Spurs has gotten off to a scorching start to the 2025-26 season, averaging 25.7 points, 12.8 rebounds, 3.9 blocks and 3.4 assists per game. The 7-foot-4 phenom’s stellar play has led to the Spurs starting out the year as one of the top teams in the Western Conference at 8-2, only behind the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
While Wembanyama is clearly one of the top young stars in the NBA, Green went a step further in his assessment of the All-Star big man. The former Spurs swingman said Wembanyama is not only a top five player right now, but he could one day be the best player ever.
“Wembanyama came out so unbelievably hot,” Green said in a one-on-one interview on behalf of his new podcast “No Fouls Given.” “People look at him as one of the best players — he could be the best player ever. He’s doing Wilt Chamberlain numbers.”
Green said that once the former No. 1 overall draft pick establishes himself offensively, he’ll be the MVP of this league. The 21-year-old already has a stacked list of accomplishments to his resume, including the NBA Rookie of the Year award along with an All-Defensive First Team selection.
Wembanyama has upped his scoring average each season, averaging 21.4 points in his rookie season before upping it to 24.3 points per game in his second year. He’s now averaging over 25 points per game.
“He’s had some nights where he scored greatly offensively, but he’s not consistent yet,” said Green of Wembanyama. “Once he becomes consistent offensively, he’ll be MVP.”
The former Spurs veteran made sure to mention that he believes his former team can make a Western Conference Finals run. However, he still believes the top two teams in the West are the Thunder and Denver Nuggets.
When ranking his MVP ladder early in the season, Green mentioned reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Milwaukee Bucks star and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic as his top three candidates.
He said Wembanyama is currently in his top five after Jokic. Green considers the 7-foot-4 star to be a top five player in the NBA.
“Wemby, he was in my top three — obviously the power rankings shift,” said Green. “He’s still a top five player to me. So far, the MVP ladder for me is SGA, Giannis and it was Wemby, but now it’s Jokic at three. He’s probably right after Jokic.”
He said the one thing Wembanyama needs to work on is getting stronger and getting to his spots.
“There’s nothing he can’t do,” said Green. “We talked about this on the pod as well. Paul [Pierce] said there’s nothing that he really needs to work on, except for getting stronger and learning the game, getting to his spots. The biggest thing is getting the ball where he wants the ball. For some reason, it’s hard for his teammates to get him the ball sometimes, and for him to not stay in a spot and get off his position and comes to the three-point line. He’s 7-4, he’s going to get to where he wants it with a smaller guy, catch the ball and shoot over that guy.”
Green claims that it’ll take two years at the most for Wembanyama to establish himself as the best player in the game.
“It’s only gonna take time,” says Green of Wembanyama winning the MVP. “It’s a matter of him just maturing, getting experience. I’d say two years at most. If he’s not one of the best players next year, in two years he’ll be the best player. He could be a guy that can win multiple MVPs.”
