Randy Gregory’s tenure with the Dallas Cowboys ended recently after he agreed to a contract with the Denver Broncos.
His decision caught many by surprise, as the Cowboys had announced on social media that they were bringing Gregory back before news of him joining the Broncos broke.
Some fans were not pleased with the development and took to Twitter to accost him. The 29-year-old replied to one of those fans and claimed that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acted in “bad faith” during the free-agency process.
One can only wonder why Gregory changed his mind after initially agreeing to a deal with the Cowboys, but it seems like specific language in the deal was the reason for his change of heart.
“Multiple sources have traced some of the differences to a forfeiture clause in the deal in Dallas that would force Gregory to surrender money if he was fined or suspended,” wrote ESPN’s Jeff Legwold.
Gregory entered the league in 2015 after being selected in the second round of that year’s draft by the Cowboys, who took a shot on him despite his draft status being negatively impacted by off-the-field issues.
While he has shown promise as a solid defender, his career has been mired by injuries and several issues that have led to suspensions in various years. He has been suspended for a total of 54 games throughout his career for violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
The University of Nebraska product will now get a fresh start with the Broncos, who are certainly hoping that the talented pass rusher can provide the team’s defensive unit with a boost during the 2022 season.
Last season, which was his fifth in the league, Gregory recorded 19 combined tackles, 17 quarterbacks hits, six sacks and four tackles for loss.
