The Green Bay Packers have a crucial offseason ahead of them. One of the reasons why is that Davante Adams still does not have a contract for next season.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Green Bay reportedly plans on franchise tagging the wide receiver before attempting to work out a long-term extension with him.
“Sources say after the Packers and Adams broke off big-money extension talks in late July, there have been no talks whatsoever about a new deal,” Rapoport wrote. “Adams hasn’t brought it up. Neither has Green Bay.
“All of which sets the stage for what several sources believe is an eventuality: The Packers give Adams the franchise tag following the season before attempting to work out a long-term deal. Based off Adams’ current salary situation, the franchise tag is expected to be about $20 million.”
Adams has been one of the best wide receivers in the NFL during the past several years. In the 2020 season, he caught 115 passes for 18 touchdowns, which led the league. He also made first-team All-Pro during the same season.
He certainly has a case for being one of the league’s highest paid wideouts. However, the Packers also have to deal with Aaron Rodgers’ contract situation, which could potentially complicate negotiations with Adams. Green Bay will be facing a tight cap situation in 2022.
Before thinking about any offseason move, the Packers are likely focused on winning their fifth Super Bowl championship this campaign. The team, which currently leads the league with a 12-3 record, has already clinched its division.
