Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was involved in a car accident on Tuesday.
When the news initially broke, many folks were concerned about whether or not the 22-year-old was okay, but shortly after news of the crash surfaced, the story took a turn.
While Ruggs did not suffer any life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash, the accident did claim the life of a 23-year-old woman. Tragically, the situation was completely avoidable, and it only occurred because Ruggs was allegedly under the influence of alcohol while driving.
On Wednesday, new details emerged, and the situation is only getting worse. It sounds like Ruggs was traveling 156 mph before the crash occurred. Additionally, it sounds like his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
The Raiders have already released Ruggs. The wide receiver’s NFL career is likely over.
It’s clearly an awful story, as an innocent life was lost due to Ruggs’ inexplicable decision to drive while intoxicated. It’s certainly something that will stick with him for the rest of his life.
More importantly, the lives of the 23-year-old woman’s family members are now forever changed.
Ruggs was in his second year at the NFL level before this incident occurred. Over seven games this season, he had 24 receptions for 469 yards and two touchdowns before being released. His career was on a great trajectory before he made the decision to drive while intoxicated.
It will certainly be worth monitoring what happens to Ruggs from here.
