Quinn Ewers’ agent rips ‘chickens—t’ rationale behind QB’s slide in 2025 NFL Draft

The Miami Dolphins selected former University of Texas at Austin quarterback Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Ewers will have a chance to back up starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, but the former top recruit had a pretty big slide in the 2025 draft.

Ewers’ agent, Ron Slavin, said he reached out to half of the league after the draft to find out why his client slipped down the draft board.

“They thought he was a third- or fourth-round pick, but too big of a name to be a clipboard holder,” Slavin said. “Which I think is chickens—.”

In his 2024 season at Texas, Ewers threw for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 65.8 percent of his passes in 14 games. He led the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff, although they came up short in their quest for a national title.

A personnel chief also offered a potential reason for Ewers’ slide during the draft, claiming that it could be viewed as a wasted pick if he were to receive an insufficient number of reps to develop.

“There’s only so many reps to go around for young quarterbacks,” the individual said. “You can justify it at other positions, but if you can’t get a quarterback the amount of work to develop him, then you’re almost wasting a pick.”

In Miami, Ewers may get a chance to gain reps given Tagovailoa’s injury history. Last season, Tagovailoa appeared in just 11 games, and the Dolphins ended up missing the playoffs as they tried Tyler Huntley, Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle at quarterback in his place.

In his NFL career, Tagovailoa has had just one season (the 2023 campaign) in which he appeared in every regular-season game. So, there’s a chance that Ewers will find himself on the field if he’s able to impress Miami’s coaching staff enough to win the backup job.

Ewers showed improvement during his college career after transferring to Texas (he began his collegiate career at Ohio State University), and he threw for over 3,400 yards in each of his final two seasons with the Longhorns.

The Dolphins have a lot of interesting weapons on offense, led by star receiver Tyreek Hill, and they could be a playoff team in the 2025 season. However, as the 2024 season showcased, Miami needs to have a contingency plan at quarterback in case Tagovailoa goes down.

For Ewers, he could make plenty of teams that passed up on him pay by being ready to step in and help Miami should Tagovailoa miss time.
