Report: Saquon Barkley expected to be ready for start of season after tearing ACL last year

After watching his 2020 season end after just two games, New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is on pace to return to the Giants backfield for the 2021 season opener.

Barkley’s devastating ACL tear came at Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears last September and took a massive toll on the Giants’ continued rebuilding plans and limited the team’s running game.

Barkley, the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, had broken the 1,000-yard barrier during each of his first two seasons and was ready to build on that effort.

In addition, his absence put more pressure on second-year quarterback Daniel Jones.

The Giants finished the 2020 campaign with a 6-10 record and surprisingly challenged for a playoff spot down the stretch. With Barkley back, that effort could definitely be more effective in the weak NFC East division.
