A new report indicates that the New York Jets could be on the verge of acquiring Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in what would be a blockbuster deal.
Talk of Rodgers leaving the Packers has been a constant source of gossip during the offseason. Among a number of different teams, the Jets have been prominently mentioned as a possible destination for the future Hall of Famer.
Exactly what the compensation would be in any deal is unknown. Rodgers is coming off a season in which he still produced solid numbers, though his production failed to lead to a playoff berth for the Packers.
Rodgers played in all 17 games for the 8-9 Packers, throwing for 3,695 yards and 26 touchdowns. His touchdown total was a steep drop from his performance from two years earlier, when he threw for a league-high 48 touchdowns.
Still, Rodgers remains able to produce on the field and would bring the type of veteran leadership that a team like the Jets need.
Last season, the Jets were seen as a surprise team during their first 11 games, compiling a 7-4 record through the month of November. However, from that point on, any playoff dreams died as the team lost its last six contests.
Most notably, the lack of any offense in those final weeks was clearly evident. At the start of that losing skid, the Jets nearly pulled off an upset at Minnesota before falling 27-22.
Yet from that point on, the Jets were only able to score 44 total points in their last five games, including just 15 total in the final three matchups.
From the perspective of the Packers, dealing away Rodgers would allow the team the opportunity to install former first-round pick Jordan Love as the team’s new starting signal-caller.
Up to this point, Love has seen little action over three seasons with the Packers. He didn’t play at all as a rookie in 2020 and has only played in 10 games since then.
The possible transition from Rodgers to Love likely feels like deja vu to the Packers. In 2008, the team allowed Hall of Famer Brett Favre to leave for the Jets and installed Rodgers in his spot.
Rodgers had also seen little playing time up to that point, playing in just seven games over his first three seasons.
One era looks to be ending in Green Bay, with the Jets apparently hopeful that Rodgers can help deliver them to the postseason.
