Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is one of the more intriguing free agents currently on the market. The veteran hasn’t played in an NFL game since the 2021 season due to a torn ACL he suffered as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.
However, it seems like there’s plenty of interest in him around the league. He and the New York Jets apparently want to get a deal done, though financials still need to be worked out.
It’s unknown exactly what type of deal Beckham will get wherever he signs, but according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, some executives believe an incentive-laden deal would be fair.
“It’s unclear what type of contract Beckham would require to sign, but a few team executives believed an incentive-laden deal would be fair under the circumstances,” Howe wrote. “There’s still time for this to shake out.”
Plenty of teams across the league would benefit from having the three-time Pro Bowler. 13 teams apparently attended his workout earlier this month in Arizona, and those teams “generally came away impressed.” According to Howe, teams noted that Beckham “still looked like a starter, cutting and changing direction with fluidity while catching the ball extremely well.”
During the 2021 campaign, the 30-year-old caught 44 passes for 537 yards and five touchdowns. After a rough start to the season with the Cleveland Browns, he joined the Rams and looked like his old self, helping the team win a Super Bowl.
In Super Bowl LVI against the Cincinnati Bengals, Beckham caught two passes for 52 yards and one score before suffering the injury.
There’s no doubt that if he hadn’t gotten injured, he would’ve received a pretty lucrative deal in the 2022 offseason. Instead, he had to begin working his way back into game shape.
Beckham visited some teams toward the end of the 2022 regular season, but it seems like he wasn’t healthy enough to sign with a team to help it compete.
Surely, the two-time All-Pro will end up signing with a team he feels has a solid chance at winning a Super Bowl this season. Given his age and the injury issues he’s had to endure, his career might be winding down pretty soon.
Another shot at a Super Bowl might be the most important thing on his mind right now.
