Jamal Adams is paying the price — a $50,000 fine — for an exchange the Seattle Seahawks safety had with a doctor on the sidelines of their game at the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 6 of the NFL season last Sunday.
“This week the NFL fined Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams $50,000 after Adams, according to the league, ‘directed verbal remarks and made inappropriate physical contact’ with a doctor in the bench area of Seattle’s Week 6 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, a league source tells CBS Sports,” wrote Jonathan Jones.
“In a letter to Adams this week, the league said Adams interfered with orderly administration of the game when the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant (UNC) was walking with Seahawks wide receiver Jake Bobo to the blue medical tent for evaluation of a concussion.”
It is the second time Adams has been involved in an altercation with a sideline doctor this season. Back in Week 4 at the New York Giants, Adams was seen yelling at a sideline doctor as he was being taken for a concussion evaluation.
The NFL did not fine him for that exchange in part because he had suffered a concussion, and Adams later made a public apology to the doctor.
Last Sunday, Seahawks teammate Bobo was being taken to the medical tent and Adams reportedly interfered with that process. Bobo eventually returned to the game, which Seattle lost 17-13.
Adams has been dealing with injuries the past several seasons and the games against the Giants and Bengals are the only two he has appeared in this season. The 28-year-old seriously considered retirement after suffering a serious leg injury in Seattle’s season opener last season that knocked him out for the rest of the campaign.
Since being traded to the Seahawks by the New York Jets prior to the 2020 NFL season, Adams has suffered two torn shoulder labrums and other injuries to his groin, elbow and fingers.
The No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Jets, the Louisiana State University product had an electrifying start to his career and was an All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection. But he has played in three games the past two seasons and now has two sideline incidents in his only games from this season.
The Seahawks traded three draft picks and safety Bradley McDougald to the Jets for Adams and a draft pick. One of those draft picks – which became No. 10 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft – was used by the Jets on wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who was named Offensive Rookie of the Year last season.
Adams is expected to play Sunday when the Seahawks host the Arizona Cardinals.
