Report: Any Golden State Warriors interest in Dejounte Murray is ‘tepid’ at best

The Golden State Warriors are not that interested in Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, according to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.

Murray has been rumored to be on the trade block this season with the Hawks sitting in the No. 10 spot in the Eastern Conference with a 20-27 record.

The former All-Star guard could be viewed as a long-term option in the trade market as he has an upcoming contract extension that runs through the 2026-27 season (with a player option for the 2027-28 season) and is worth more than $114 million.

“Mike Dunleavy Jr. spent a chunk of time chatting with Atlanta general manager Landry Fields before a recent Hawks game,” Slater wrote. “But any interest in Dejounte Murray, the No. 1 player on The Athletic’s trade deadline big board, is tepid at best, which won’t lead to movement. He’s another guard about to step into a four-year, $114 million deal. It’s a similar story with Chicago’s Zach LaVine.”

This season, Murray is averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from beyond the arc.

While Murray would likely help a struggling Warriors team, the team may not want to part ways with the assets to deal for him – especially since he’d give the team yet another high-paid guard with the Warriors already paying Stephen Curry and Chris Paul.

Murray has not been able to play the same way he did on the San Antonio Spurs while in Atlanta, as he’s had to share the primary ball-handling duties with Hawks guard Trae Young. Things would likely be very similar in Golden State next to Curry.

The Warriors are just 20-24 this season and hold the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference. While the team may try to upgrade the roster at the deadline, adding a player of Murray’s stature may lead to some growing pains that the team really can’t afford if it wants to make the playoffs.

Golden State’s lack of interest also makes sense since the team is hoping that Paul can make an impact once he returns to the lineup from a hand injury.

While Murray will be sought after in the trade market by several teams, it doesn’t appear that Golden State will be one of them at this year’s trade deadline.
