Report: Spencer Dinwiddie aiming to play for Brooklyn Nets if they make NBA Finals

Despite missing virtually all of the 2020-21 season thus far, a new report indicates that Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is aiming to play if the Nets end up reaching the NBA Finals.

Kristian Winfield of New York Daily News indicated that Dinwiddie’s rigorous rehabilitation from his Dec. 27 injury has gone smoothly, with his return potentially coming even sooner than the start of the finals on July 8.

“After more than six months on the sidelines due to an ACL injury, Dinwiddie is eyeing a return to play if the Nets make it to the Finals, the Daily News has learned,” wrote Winfield. “A source close to the Nets’ combo guard also says after spending most of the regular season rehabbing in Los Angeles, Dinwiddie is planning to return to the team ‘sooner than later.’

 

“’He’s going to be in Brooklyn to support his team, the source said. He definitely is.’”

Nets head coach Steve Nash has reportedly not been enthusiastic about a potential Dinwiddie return, indicating that getting Dinwiddie back to full health was the top priority.

If Dinwiddie does return, it would make for one of the more rapid returns from an ACL injury ever, though the risk of reinjury may be in the back of the minds of Nets management.

Last season, the 28-year-old Dinwiddie averaged 20.6 points, 6.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Nets. Those are enviable numbers for a team that’s looking to get back to the finals after playing in back-to-back years in 2002 and 2003.
