Ty Lawson says he’d trade Luka Doncic for Anthony Edwards or SGA: ‘Being honest’

Former NBA guard Ty Lawson revealed that he would trade Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic if Anthony Edwards or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander were on the table.

“I would get Luka up outta here, me, being honest, I would — listen, for Ant-Man, Shai,” he said.

While Lawson may believe that the Lakers should leave the door open to moving Doncic for one of those star players, there’s no guarantee that the Minnesota Timberwolves would make Edwards available or that the Oklahoma City Thunder would make Gilgeous-Alexander available – even for Doncic.

Minnesota just knocked the Lakers out of the playoffs this season (and made the Western Conference Finals last season) while the Thunder are the No. 1 seed in the West and in the second round for a second consecutive campaign.

The Lakers traded for Doncic during the 2024-25 season, and he helped them reach the No. 3 seed in the West. Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves formed one of the better trios in the NBA during the regular season.

Lawson may prefer Edwards or Gilgeous-Alexander over Doncic, but it’s hard to imagine a scenario where the Lakers would move on from the Slovenian guard. Los Angeles made a monumental shift in the franchise by trading Anthony Davis for Doncic, and it can extend Doncic’s contract this offseason.

As a Laker during the regular season, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game while shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from beyond the arc. The Lakers went 18-10 in the 28 games that he appeared in.

While Los Angeles’ first-round playoff exit is a bit disappointing, Lawson’s thought process may be a little bit of an overreaction.

Just last season, Doncic led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals as the No. 5 seed in the West and beat both Gilgeous-Alexander and Edwards to get there. He’s also been an MVP candidate at times during his career, although he did not play in enough games during the 2024-25 season to qualify for the award.

It would be shocking if the Lakers entertained the idea of moving Doncic this coming offseason after orchestrating a shocking trade to bring him in during the 2024-25 campaign.
