The NBA tried to get several stars, such as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards and Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, to participate in the 2021 Slam Dunk Contest.
However, the attempts to get Brown and Edwards were met with rejection.
“The league tried to add high-profile names. Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Anthony Edwards — who recently had one of the most jaw-dropping dunks you’ll ever witness — turned down the league’s request to compete in the Slam Dunk Contest, league sources told Yahoo Sports,” wrote Chris Haynes.
“A field with [Zion] Williamson and Edwards would have certainly made for must-see TV.
“Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown and Charlotte Hornets high-flyer Miles Bridges declined as well, sources said.”
Of course, fans would have loved to see Edwards in the Slam Dunk Contest.
The No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft has showcased some ridiculous dunks this season. Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade regards the Timberwolves youngster in a high manner.
While Williamson gave fans slight optimism he would participate in the contest, he ultimately turned down the star-studded event. Los Angeles Lakers fan favorite Alex Caruso also declined an invitation to be part of the dunking extravaganza.
Last year, former Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. took home the Slam Dunk Contest trophy over Orlando Magic star Aaron Gordon in an entertaining and controversial contest.
The 2021 All-Star Game will take place on Sunday.
