The NBA reportedly is discussing adding an in-season tournament in future seasons that would give winning players some major prize money.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that each player would receive $1 million in prize money for winning.

This would be a major change to the NBA schedule, but it could add some extra competition to the season.

Fans and NBA pundits have complained at times that teams don’t try as much during the season, but the NBA is trying to fix that problem.

Last season, the league continued the use of the play-in tournament to determine the final playoff seeds, and NBA commissioner Adam Silver has been innovative in his changes to the league since taking over for David Stern.

The WNBA recently implemented its own in-season tournament. The league’s tournament is called the Commissioner’s Cup. It will be interesting to see if the NBA follows a similar format.

The 2021-22 NBA regular season is set to begin on Oct. 19.
