Report: ‘Early word’ is that Spurs are no longer sellers amid resurgent season

While the 2024-25 NBA regular season isn’t even halfway over yet, the San Antonio Spurs have been one of the league’s overachieving teams to this point.

The Spurs were one of the worst teams in the league just a season ago. San Antonio won a mere 22 games during the 2023-24 campaign and finished with the second-worst record in the Western Conference.

But San Antonio is currently within striking distance of a top-five seed in a very competitive West this season. With a record of 15-13, the ninth-place Spurs are just one game back of the fifth-place Los Angeles Lakers in the standings.

Per NBA insider Jake Fischer, the “early word” is that the Spurs are no longer sellers with the trade deadline coming up later this season.

“For the last couple years we have looked at San Antonio as being sellers,” Fischer said during a Bleacher Report stream. “Right now, the early word is that they are not.”

Big man Victor Wembanyama has been a major key to the Spurs’ resurgent season. After a fantastic rookie year, he has been a dominant force on both sides of the ball again as a sophomore.

He’s leading the Spurs in points (24.7), rebounds (10.0) and blocks (3.8) per game, with the last mark also being a league-high. Wembanyama has also improved upon his field goal and 3-point percentages compared to those from his inaugural season in the league.

The Frenchman had one of his best two-way performances of the season in San Antonio’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday. Offensively, he scored 30 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. Then on the other side of the ball, he blocked 10 shots, which marks the most rejections by any player in one game this season.

Moreover, legendary point guard Chris Paul has proven himself to be a nice piece alongside Wembanyama in the starting lineup. He’s dishing out a team-high 8.4 assists per contest in his first season in San Antonio.

The Spurs will attempt to continue their winning ways when they play the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. Philadelphia sits as the No. 12 seed in the Eastern Conference with a record of 9-17 on the season and was just recently blown out of the building by the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.
