The New England Patriots placed Romeo Doubs on injured reserve Monday, sidelining the wide receiver for at least four games after he hurt his shoulder during Sunday’s win over the New York Jets.
The move leaves Drake Maye without another receiving option just one day after A.J. Brown returned from his own stint on IR. Doubs’ earliest possible return is Nov. 29 against the Los Angeles Chargers, with New England’s bye falling after the four games he must miss.
New England signed defensive back Elliott Davison from the practice squad to the active roster and added receiver Ryan Miller to the practice squad.
Doubs was injured while making a diving, 42-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter of the Patriots’ 26-19 victory. He did not return, leaving New England to finish a game that also saw three offensive linemen exit with injuries.

The touchdown was the longest of Doubs’ NFL career. It surpassed a 33-yard score he caught while playing for Green Bay last season.
Romeo Doubs will miss Patriots’ game against Packers
Doubs will be unavailable for Thursday’s trip to Chicago, the Nov. 1 game at Miami, the Nov. 8 home matchup with Green Bay and the Nov. 15 game against Detroit in Munich.
The Patriots then have their Week 11 bye before visiting the Chargers. That makes the absence longer on the calendar than a typical four-week stretch and rules out a meeting with his former team.
Nov. 29 is an eligibility date, not an announced recovery target. The team’s transaction release did not provide a timetable for Doubs to resume playing or say he would be ready for the first game after the bye.
Doubs signed with New England in March after four seasons with the Packers. He has 14 receptions for 261 yards and three touchdowns through six games this season.
His production has included different types of contributions. He gained 96 yards on three catches against Pittsburgh, then caught six passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns in the win at Buffalo. Sunday’s score was his third touchdown in the past three games.
New England is losing a receiver who has supplied both longer gains and scoring catches, even without consistently high reception totals. Doubs averaged 18.6 yards per catch before the injury.
A.J. Brown returns to a depleted receiving group
Brown’s return helps, but the Patriots still cannot put their full receiving group together. Mack Hollins also remains on IR after New England placed him there with a calf injury on Oct. 10.
The available group now includes Brown, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III. Miller’s addition provides another practice-squad option, although Monday’s announcement did not put him on the 53-man roster.
Earlier in the season, Brown’s absence shifted attention to New England’s other receivers. Now the Patriots need him to regain his production while two of those alternatives are unavailable.
Brown caught three of 10 targets for 27 yards against the Jets after missing four games with a high ankle sprain. He played 52 offensive snaps, the most among the team’s receivers.
Brown accepted responsibility for the missed opportunities afterward.
“I didn’t play well,” Brown said in the team’s postgame transcript. “I’m much better than what I put on display today, there’s no excuses. I’ll be better.”
Mike Vrabel maintained his confidence in Brown and said the receiver’s return had not disrupted the offense’s flow. The coach explained that Maye still has to work through his reads when a defense takes away the intended target.
DeMario Douglas has a receiving opportunity, but roles differ
Douglas gave New England a productive answer Sunday, matching his career high with seven receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown. That performance provides a more concrete reason to watch his role than simply assuming every available receiver benefits equally from Doubs’ absence.
Chism’s workload illustrates the distinction. Chism was on the field for 42 plays, including 31 runs, and he filled Hollins’ role in the running game.
That is substantial playing time, but it is not the same as a large receiving workload. Williams remains another option, and the Patriots have not announced how they will divide Doubs’ responsibilities.
The changes also come with limited preparation time before Chicago. Asked Monday about managing the short week, Vrabel emphasized mental preparation and physical recovery in his press conference, noting the limits on what the team can accomplish physically between Sunday and Thursday.
The fantasy read
For fantasy managers, Douglas merits waiver consideration after Sunday’s seven-catch performance, particularly in leagues that reward receptions.
Our assessment is that he offers the clearest recent evidence of receiving production among the secondary wideouts, although Brown’s 10 targets show that he remains a major part of the target tree.
Chism is a more speculative bench stash. His blocking-heavy usage means a high snap total alone should not be treated as a reason to start him.
illiams likewise needs a clearer receiving workload before the injury can justify a confident start/sit recommendation.
Doubs belongs in an available fantasy IR slot. Managers without that option must weigh holding him against a stretch that includes four missed games and a bye, with no confirmed return date.
