The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly are letting star cornerback Darius Slay’s agent seek a trade.
The team is still hopeful that it can find a solution where Slay remains an Eagle, but he could end up being dealt this offseason.
Slay, who has no guaranteed money left on his contract, reportedly wants a new deal.
His current deal runs through the 2023 season and has three voided years on it as well, per Spotrac. The Eagles, who had an elite defense in the 2022 season, may need to work out a new deal if they want to keep Slay on the roster.
A five-time Pro Bowler, Slay has spent the past three seasons with the Eagles after beginning his NFL career with the Detroit Lions.
The 32-year-old was dominant in the 2022 campaign, starting all 17 games for the Eagles and helping lead them to a Super Bowl appearance. Slay finished the season with 55 combined tackles, 14 passes defended and three interceptions.
In his three seasons with the Eagles, Slay has been a Pro Bowler twice and picked off seven passes in 48 games.
Losing Slay would be a major blow for Philly, especially since another one of the team’s cornerbacks, James Bradberry, is set to hit free agency.
The Eagles could end up losing several key defenders from last season’s team, including Slay, Bradberry, Robert Quinn, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Fletcher Cox and Javon Hargrave.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, it’s hard to pay and maintain a championship team year after year. The Eagles had the best record in the NFC in the regular season in the 2022 campaign, but they ultimately fell short to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
There will probably be a market for Slay, but the team that acquires him most likely will need to give him a new deal. The Eagles still have quarterback Jalen Hurts on his rookie deal, which should allow them some flexibility to bring back some of the players from last season’s team.
It will be interesting to see if Slay is a part of that group or if he is playing for someone else in the 2023 season.
