Deebo Samuel opens up on Super Bowl loss to Chiefs: ‘It puts you in depression’

In February of last year, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers met in the Super Bowl. San Francisco star wide receiver Deebo Samuel was on the losing end of the contest, as the 49ers lost in overtime by a final score of 25-22.

Samuel contributed 33 receiving yards on three receptions and eight rushing yards on three carries on the NFL’s biggest stage.

The 28-year-old recently spoke about the 49ers’ Super Bowl loss on a podcast and admitted that he was down in the dumps for quite a bit after San Francisco came up just short.

“Not gonna lie bro, losin’ the Super Bowl, it puts you in depression,” Samuel said. “I don’t think — you go months without talkin’ to people, wantin’ to be seen. Bro when I lost the Super Bowl, bro I stayed in Vegas and hopped on a — I got on a sprinter to come back home. By myself, seven hours just on there like [pretends to sleep]. Bro losin’ the Super Bowl, that’s one of the worst feelings in ever. Think about it in our position. Bro we just went through camp. We just went through the whole season. We got here. We lose. Now you back to work in three weeks.”

Unfortunately for Samuel’s 49ers, they have taken a major step back this season compared to the year prior. San Francisco owns a 6-10 record with one game remaining on its regular-season schedule and has already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Plus, the 49ers have looked particularly off their game as of late. The team has lost each of its past three contests and gave up 40 points to the Detroit Lions a few days back on Dec. 30.

But if there’s one positive takeaway to glean from Samuel’s sixth season with the 49ers, it’s that he’s still put up impressive individual numbers. He has totaled 670 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns and 28 first downs receiving across 15 games played thus far.

Samuel has racked up triple digits in receiving yards in two games since the start of the campaign to boot, and he totaled a season-high 110 yards against the Minnesota Vikings in September.

Even though the 49ers won’t have a shot to take care of unfinished business from a year ago and win a Super Bowl, Samuel will try to cap off the 2024 regular season on a high note when San Francisco takes on the Arizona Cardinals in its final game of the campaign on Jan. 5.

The 49ers will finish the season with a 7-10 record with a win on Sunday and 6-11 should San Francisco lose its fourth game in a row. This season will mark the first time that the 49ers have finished with fewer than 10 victories since the 2020 campaign.
