Utah Jazz guard Collin Sexton is convinced that he is among the best players at his position in the NBA.
“If I’m putting myself in there, for sure,” Sexton said when asked if he is a top-10 point guard in the NBA. “I put myself against anybody. At the end of the day, I don’t back down from nobody. I got a different type of chip on my shoulder. I got a different type of grind that when I step between those lines, it’s me against you.”
Interestingly, Sexton has shifted between playing the point guard and shooting guard positions throughout his NBA career, and he was listed as a shooting guard in the 2023-24 regular season.
The point guard position is arguably the most stacked in the league right now. Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard, Luka Doncic, Jalen Brunson and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are only a few of the star players who spent last season at the point guard spot.
But despite all the talented point guards that play in the NBA, the numbers that Sexton put up in his second season in Utah indicate that he merits consideration for being a top-10 point guard in the league.
After a shaky first season with the Jazz from a scoring standpoint, Sexton solidified himself as one of Utah’s top scoring options. Sexton averaged the second-most points on Utah behind only Lauri Markkanen, and he also averaged the third-most shot attempts per game with 13.3.
In addition to all that Sexton contributed from a scoring standpoint, he was also perhaps the Jazz’s top playmaker last season. He averaged 4.9 assists per game, which was only 0.1 assists fewer than what the team leader — Jordan Clarkson — averaged.
But the fact that Sexton ranked among the best on Utah’s roster in scoring and playmaking is a little less impressive when considering that the Jazz didn’t experience much collective success.
Utah won just 31 of its 82 regular-season games and ended the campaign as the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference. A poor finish to the season dashed any hopes that Sexton and the Jazz had of qualifying for the play-in tournament, as the team won only two of its last 10 contests and finished a whopping 15 games back of the No. 10 seed in the conference.
