The Golden State Warriors do not expect Kristaps Porzingis to be around the team in the immediate future, adding another layer of uncertainty after reporting that they are exploring trades involving the veteran center.

Golden State addressed the situation Wednesday in a statement. The team declined to discuss speculation about a trade or Porzingis’ health and basketball future, but made its immediate expectations clear.

“We are not going to comment on trade speculation or reports regarding his health-related matter or future,” the Warriors wrote. “As noted last week, conversations between the Warriors, Kristaps and his representatives will remain private. We are not anticipating Kristaps being around the team in the immediate future.”

In last week’s update, Golden State expected him around his teammates despite his indefinite absence from games.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday that Porzingis is seriously considering whether to step away from basketball permanently as Golden State examines ways to trade his contract. The Warriors’ statement did not announce a retirement or a completed deal.

Those distinctions matter for a team trying to determine whether it can still plan around Porzingis on the court or needs to find help elsewhere.

Why Porzingis’ contract matters to the Warriors

The financial structure gives Golden State another option while his playing future remains uncertain.

Porzingis earns $20 million this season and has only a small partial guarantee for the following year. He described the arrangement as effectively an expiring contract that the Warriors could use alongside other assets in a trade.

ESPN’s Anthony Slater added that no move was imminent. His reporting described a shift in Golden State’s thinking: Porzingis’ salary could be used to match money in a deal rather than the team continuing to count on him as its starting center.

That does not establish what another team would offer, which players Golden State could acquire or what additional assets it would have to surrender. It explains why the contract remains relevant even with no clear playing timetable.

Golden State also preserved flexibility in Draymond Green’s offseason agreement, though nothing in Wednesday’s reporting establishes that Green is involved in a Porzingis deal.

What Golden State would be replacing

Porzingis averaged 16.1 points per game in 15 games for Golden State last season, shooting 31.1 percent from 3-point range.

His scoring gives context to the starting-center role Slater described. Replacing that contribution would require more than filling an available roster spot, particularly if Golden State has to give up other assets to bring back a player who can help immediately.

For now, the reporting leaves two separate questions unresolved: whether Porzingis will resume his career and whether the Warriors can complete a trade. Neither Wednesday’s team statement nor the reports cited above settle those questions.

Fantasy basketball outlook

For fantasy managers, our read is to treat Porzingis as an uncertain stash rather than someone to build an immediate starting lineup around. A trade report alone is not evidence of a return to action.

Managers considering a replacement should prioritize a demonstrated role and available minutes rather than assume one Warriors player will inherit all of his expected production.
