ESPN has reported that signs are pointing to the idea that the Boston Celtics will sell for a historic price.
“Currently the Boston Celtics are for sale, and there are indications they could produce the highest price ever for an NBA team, which is currently held by Mat Ishbia’s purchase of the Suns,” ESPN wrote. “That could even further reset the market, and that is a contributing factor in the NBA’s decision to go slower on expansion and wait for that sale to happen, league sources said.”
When diving deeper into the situation, one can see the rationale for why folks expect the Celtics to sell for such a high price tag. For one, the Celtics are one of the most storied franchises in all of professional sports.
Boston has won 18 NBA titles, which is the most from any one franchise in the history of the league. The Celtics were also one of the first 11 teams to exist in the league when it was established in the 1946-47 season.
On top of that, Boston is just months removed from winning a title. The Celtics eliminated Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the 2024 NBA Finals, and Jaylen Brown took home the Finals MVP award.
But the Celtics stand out as an attractive team to buy for more than just its remarkable history. Boston has a lot going for it in the present as well.
After all, the Celtics employ perhaps the most talented team in the league. Boston’s starting five at full strength — comprised of Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Brown, Jayson Tatum and Al Horford — is incredibly talented and versatile on both sides of the ball. The Celtics have plenty of capable reserve players as well, as Sam Hauser, Payton Pritchard and Luke Kornet all gave the team productive minutes off the pine last season.
Boston seemingly has a bright future to look forward to to boot. The Celtics are in prime position to compete for a title for years to come when factoring in that Tatum and Brown are still a ways away from their 30th birthdays. Kristaps Porzingis has yet to turn 30 years old either, though he’s 29 and was born in the month of August.
