On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos was involved in a scary medical situation. In Miami’s opening training camp practice, Matos went down with an injury and had to be airlifted to a local hospital.

While the details of Matos’ injury aren’t publicly available at this time, he is in stable condition at the very least, according to the Dolphins organization.

“Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos was injured late in the teamโ€™s first training camp practice and was taken by helicopter to a local hospital, the team confirmed Wednesday,” the Miami Herald‘s Barry Jackson wrote.

“Matos is in stable condition, but the team declined to say anything else about the nature of his injury.

“The team ended practice while medical officials were administering to Matos, who was on the field and surrounded by teammates for more than 10 minutes before being airlifed to a hospital.

“The team said the injury was not the reason practice ended after 90 minutes. First training camp practices generally tend to be shorter.”

Unfortunately, Matos wasn’t the only member of the Dolphins to leave with an injury in the practice. Veteran cornerback Artie Burns โ€” who has played eight seasons in the NFL with three different teams โ€” left on crutches after he got entangled with another player during drills, per Jackson.

“Veteran cornerback Artie Burns, who signed with the team earlier this offseason, left the facility on crutches with what appeared to be an injury to his right leg,” Jackson wrote.

“Burns was injured when he was tangled up with another player during beck-pedal drills early in practice. He slammed his helmet in frustration.”

Now, it sounds like the fear is a torn ACL for Burns.

Matos went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft before signing with the Dolphins through the league’s International Player Pathway program. Outside of the preseason, he has yet to play in a game at the NFL level, and hopefully, his injury won’t keep him from accomplishing that goal soon.

As for Burns, the Dolphins signed him to a one-year deal after he suited up in four contests with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2024 season. He’s on the other side of 30 at this point and has logged only seven starts across his last four seasons in the league.

Still, with Miami’s cornerback room already an area of concern, his injury is a rough sign for the Dolphins as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Hopefully, the remainder of Miami’s training camp will go much smoother than the first practice did, with healthier days ahead for the team.

The Dolphins are beginning to gear up for the coming 2025 season after they majorly underperformed a season ago. With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missing six games with injuries and wide receiver Tyreek Hill looking like a shell of his best self, Miami finished the 2024 season with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs.

A strong training camp for the Dolphins would be a step in the right direction toward putting together a successful 2025 campaign. Miami will kick off its 17-game season with a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7 in what will be a road game for the Dolphins.
