The Dallas Cowboys are in a quagmire with one of the top defensive players in all of football. Micah Parsons โ€” already a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro โ€” has been looking for a new contract with his rookie deal set to expire following the 2025 season, but he and the Cowboys are at odds in light of some developments, and now, their time together may be up.

In one key detail, the Cowboys reportedly thought they had a deal in place with Parsons in the spring without involving his agent. Apparently, Parsons spoke with team owner Jerry Jones earlier this year, and the Cowboys believed those discussions were contract negotiations.

But Parsons reportedly believed those talks were “just conversations” and wanted his agent to negotiate a deal. The organization then reportedly didn’t want to communicate with his agent after it thought it had a deal in the bag.

“The relationship between Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys has deteriorated to the point where the star pass rusher is considering drastic measures, which could include a trade request or even a declaration that he is severing his relationship with the team, according to a league source familiar with the situation,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Jon Machota wrote. “The two sides remain far apart heading into the second week of training camp and are not currently negotiating.

“Among the key issues: Parsons spoke directly with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones over multiple days in the spring. The team believed those conversations were negotiations and that it had a deal, multiple league sources said. But Parsons believed the talks were just conversations and wanted his agent to handle the negotiations. When Parsonsโ€™ agent attempted to start negotiations, the Cowboys declined to engage with him and told the pass rusher that they believed they already had a deal.

“Now, the team is refusing to engage with Parsonsโ€™ agent at all, creating a tense standoff amid increasing friction.”

In the time since the aforementioned report from The Athletic came out, Parsons has taken to social media and announced that he has requested a trade. He also offered his side of the bizarre contract story.

For as effective a defensive player as Parsons is, he is on the heels of easily his least productive NFL season from a statistical point of view. He finished with career-lows in games played (13), sacks (12), combined tackles (43), solo tackles (30), assisted tackles (13), tackles for loss (12) and quarterback hits (23) last season. He was limited to 13 games thanks to a high ankle sprain.

Still, he’s an elite talent, and the Cowboys are now facing a situation where they may be dealt a brutal blow as the team looks to have a bounce-back campaign in 2025. The Cowboys’ defense was much too porous even with Parsons in the fold last season, as Dallas allowed a whopping 27.5 points per game, the second-most of any team in the league.

If he ends up getting dealt and the Cowboys get anything less than some highly valuable defensive help in return, they could be in danger of being fatally inept on that side of the ball in the coming season.

It’s unfortunate that the situation between Parsons and the Cowboys has resulted in a formal trade request from the star. It would be in the best interest of the Cowboys and their pursuit of winning at a high level this coming season and in the future to convince Parsons to stick around, but it might be too late for that.
